September 26 – October
6, 2008
In the highlands of
central Mexico, nestled in
the rich mining hills of the Sierra Madre Occidental,
lie my Mexican hometowns: the historically important and visually exciting
cities of Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende.
While they both share a rich history of conquest and revolution, today each
has its own unique identity and dynamic personality that together offer the
visitor a rich taste of colonial Mexico.
I lived in Guanajuato
for many years and my fondness for this unique, elegant, remarkable city only
grows with each visit. It is an honor and a joy to share my favorite places
and people of Guanajuato with my fellow travelers. And while I have always
enjoyed the wealth of restaurants, art galleries, spas, and shops that fill the
charming town of San Miguel de Allende, during all my visits there I had somehow missed
what my friends who live there knew all along: that below the trendy exterior
beats the heart of a purely Mexican town. Who knew that one of my most
out-of-my-skin Mexican experiences of last year would happen in the town I
loved for its comfort zones?
Casa Estrella Inn in Guanajuato will be our first
stop on this tour. The guest rooms are lovely, the breakfasts are heavenly,
and the view of Guanajuato from the terrace is gorgeous. In town we'll discover
the wonders of this 16th-century city and see Guanajuato's most remarkable
trait, the subterranean labyrinth of tunnels of that zig-zag
beneath the city. During our stay we'll visit art and history museums,
studios of talented local artists, and the homes and haciendas of several of
my dear friends who call this glorious city their home. Mexicocina
is brimming with images of the pottery created by local masters and there
will be time for tours of many of their studios.
From Guanajuato, we'll take the scenic mountain route to San Miguel de Allende, visiting Dolores Hidalgo along the way. Dolores
is a city known for the important role it played in the Mexican Revolution as
well as the lovely talavera-style
pottery produced there. But I have say, my favorite
reason to stop in Dolores is a lunch of killer carnitas and freshly made tortillas followed by stroll around the town
square nibbling on a cone filled with an exotically flavored ice cream. Ever
tried avocado or corn ice cream? Delicious!
The next five days of the tour will
be spent at the elegant Casa Luna Bed and
Breakfast in San Miguel de Allende, San Miguel
is a charming and friendly artist's enclave known for its picturesque charm
as well as its fabulous galleries and shops. Shopping is a full time job in
San Miguel, and we'll certainly do our share, but our main focus will be on
the fiesta for San Miguel's patron saint. I was brought to tears at the
sights and sounds of the fiesta of Saint Michael: the candlelit parade at
dawn that culminated in forty-five minutes of nonstop fireworks, the dancers
in their amazing costumes who came from all over Mexico to share their souls,
and on Sunday night the three gigantic castillos,
without a doubt most beautiful towers of pyrotechnic prowess I have ever
seen. As I looked around me in the smoky multicolor glow I saw the faces of Mexico
smiling back at me. It was a thrill I can't wait to share with you.
