September 19 - 29, 2008

In the highlands of central Mexico, nestled in the rich mining hills of the Sierra Madre Occidental, lie the historically important and visually exciting colonial cities of Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende. They share a rich history of conquest and revolution; yet today each has its own unique identity and dynamic personality.

I lived in Guanajuato for many years and my fondness for this remarkable city only grows with each visit. In town we’ll discover the wonders of this16th-century city of narrow pedestrian streets lined with colorful houses meandering down hillsides, ending in tree-lined plazas filled with fountains and cafes. In the Jardín Unión, visitors and locals alike gather to enjoy the cacophony of the ranchera, norteña, and mariachi bands. Perhaps Guanajuato’s most remarkable trait is the subterranean labyrinth of tunnels that zig and zag beneath the city. And behind the doors lie art and history museums, studios of talented artists, and the homes and haciendas of my dear friends who call this glorious city their home.

From Guanajuato, we’ll take the scenic mountain route to San Miguel de Allende, visiting several talented ceramicists along the way. Mexicocina is brimming with images of the beautiful pottery created in this area. Our trip will allows us time to visit the workshops of Gorky Gonzalez, Capelo, Mayólica Santa Rosa, and the colorful talavera pottery of Dolores Hidalgo, as we stop along the “Pottery Trail” en route to San Miguel.

The next portion of our trip will be in San Miguel, a charming and friendly artist’s enclave known for its picturesque charm. I have always enjoyed San Miguel’s wealth of restaurants, art galleries, spas, and shops that line every block, but what I had somehow missed all these years was what my friends this knew all along: below that trendy exterior beats the heart of a purely Mexican town. Who know that one of my most out-of-my-skin Mexican experiences of the year would happen in the town I loved for its comfort zones? I was brought to tears at the sights and sounds San Miguel’s fiesta of her patron saint; the candlelit parade at dawn that culminated in forty five minutes of nonstop fireworks, the dancers in their amazing costumes who came from all over Mexico to share their souls, and on Sunday night the three gigantic castillos, without a doubt most beautiful towers of pyrotechnic prowess I have ever seen and as I looked around me in the smoky multicolor glow I saw the faces of Mexico smiling back at me. What a thrill! I enjoyed it all so much that I added an extra day to this year’s tour.
