This tour begins in Mexico City with
an oh-so-soft landing at the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel. We will meet
our fellow travelers at a welcome dinner on Friday night, then spend
Saturday in nearby Chapultepec Park and the world-renowned Anthropology
Museum. On Sunday we’ll fly to Tuxtla Gutierrez and make the short drive
to Chiapa de Corzo, our first stop in Chiapas. This town must be the
Celebration Capital of the Known World, if there is such a thing, and
every day there will bring us yet another round of festivities. Chiapa de
Corzo is also the home base for boat trips down the stunning Sumidero
Canyon, and we'll take a break from all the merriment to enjoy several
hours on the river taking in the glorious sights of this awesome natural
wonder. After three fun-filled days in
Chiapa de Corzo we’ll drive into the mountains to San Cristóbal de las
Casas, our home base for the next six days. We will stay at the Hotel
Diego de Mazariegos, a charming colonial hotel conveniently located just a
few blocks from the main plaza. From there, we'll enjoy the many
charms of San Cristóbal, and they are numerous. The city itself is home
to many museums, artist’s workshops, textile shops, a colorful mercado
(market), countless cafes, and churches galore, but it is perhaps best
known for the indigenous Maya villages in the outlying areas. San Juan
Chamula, Zinacantán, Amatenango del Valle, and many more are just a short
drive away. These pueblos exist today much as they have for
centuries, each with its own customs, language, craft, and traje
(local dress). It is an eye-opening experience to visit the markets,
churches, and homes of these villages. With all this to take in each day,
our evenings will be fairly unstructured. A walk on acalá (walking
street) might be in order, or perhaps a cup of hot chocolate and a good
book in front of the fireplace would be just right to finish off a
full-to-overflowing day. After a week in San Cristóbal
we’ll climb into our private vans for a spectacular road trip through
the mountains of Chiapas as we wend our way to Palenque, stopping en route
at the waterfalls of Agua Azul and Misol Ha. Upon our arrival in Palenque,
we’ll check into creekside bungalows at the Chan Kah Resort Village, our
jungle hideaway in Palenque. In the next three days there will be time to
tour the nearby ruins with and without our local experts, bird-watch from
the comfort of our patios each morning, explore downtown Palenque, or just
simply kick back at the pool. On Saturday we’ll return to Mexico City and the Four Seasons with plenty of time to enjoy the pleasures of this glorious hotel. After one last glorious breakfast on Sunday morning, we will bid farewell to Mexico, lindo y querido. January 11 - 27, 2008 -
