August 15 – 25, 2008

The elegant colonial city of Morelia will be our first destination on this tour to the marvelous state of Michoacán. Morelia is a city rich in history and culture, and our stay there will allow us time to see many of its historical sights and museums and visit the friendly and fascinating food market. From Morelia we will drive across lush green mountains to the town of Zitácuaro and our wonderful hotel, Rancho San Cayetano. When you meet Pablo and Lisette and their exceptional staff, see the lovely green lawns and pine forests beyond, and enjoy your first delicious meal in the cozy dining room you’ll know why this is one of my favorite inns in Mexico.

I added an extra day with Diana to this year’s trip, so on Monday we’ll have plenty of time to tour the local market with her, shopping for ingredients for the dishes we’ll be preparing, seeking out wild mushrooms and huitlacoche for us to cook up, asking questions and learning along the way. Our next three days will be spent in the kitchen at Quinta Diana, DK’s eco-positive home located just a short walk from the inn. We’ll be chopping, rolling, and stirring alongside Diana as we prepare some of Mexico’s classic dishes with the bounty of fresh ingredients we purchased. Beginners and professionals alike will find our days in the kitchen with DK to be informative, challenging, and dynamic. Each day will culminate in a celebratory meal where we will share all the dishes prepared; a special time to enjoy new flavors, friends, and ideas.

On Friday we will drive back across the rolling green hills of Michoacán to the picturesque lakeside town of Pátzcuaro, where we will spend the coming days enjoying this area’s rich artistic heritage. Some of Mexico’s finest folk art is produced in the villages surrounding Lake Pátzcuaro—copperware in Santa Clara del Cobre, masks in Tocuaro, distinctive ceramics in Tzintzuntzan, and so much more—and visits to the homes and studios of some of my favorite artisans are planned. Pátzcuaro is also one the the prettiest towns in Mexico—whitewashed adobe houses capped by red tile roofs line the cobblestone streets leading to plazas filled with townsfolk selling their wares or passing the afternoon under a shady tree. It’s a town I never tire of visiting, and one I love sharing.

While this tour includes cooking classes with the master, it is appropriate for non-cooks as well. If your traveling companion is not interested in attending classes with Diana, there is still plenty for them to do in the surrounding area, and they are welcome to join us for our afternoon meal every day. Group members not attending classes receive a $300 discount on the price of the tour.
